Migration FAQ: Key Terms and Questions Explained

Migration has always been a normality in human history, shaping societies for as long as people have existed. This FAQ explains the key questions and terms related to migration.

Human History Is a History of Migration

Banner with the inscription: Migration is the mother of all societies.
Migration is a broad term concerning all aspects of people relocating their center of life from one place to another. Historically, migration has been the norm rather than the exception—human history is a history of migration, and many societies are a result of human movement. The experiences, policies, and perspectives linked to migration are diverse and complex.

Translation of the photo: "Migration is the mother of all societies."

Resistance Against Right-Wing Migration Policy

In the political debate, migration has long been used as a scapegoat for all kinds of problems by the extreme right - and increasingly by centrist parties as well. Arguing with misinformation and racist stereotypes has become a normalilty in politics and the media. Migrant self-organisations and solidarity networks resist and fight every day for the rights of migrants, for a better life and for a more democratic society.

This FAQ was originally written in German with a focus on Germany. We have translated it for people in Germany who do not speak German and for those interested outside of Germany.
